Create an account

Sign up, verify your email, create an organisation and add a second factor. What each of the five steps asks for, and what to do when one of them refuses.

A Balta account is a person. An organisation is what holds services, billing and members, and you create one as part of signing up.

Signup has five steps and the screen shows which one you are on: Account, Verify email, Organisation, Security, First service.

Before you start

An email address you can receive mail at, and a password of at least 12 characters. That is the whole list. There are no rules about symbols or mixed case, because a phrase you can remember beats a short password with punctuation in it.

Create your account

  1. Go to the signup page. The card is headed Create your account.
  2. Fill in Your name. This is the name the people you work with see.
  3. Fill in Email address and Password.
  4. Submit the form.

The form gives the same answer whether or not the address already has an account. Saying that an address was taken would tell anyone who typed it the same thing.

Verify your email

  1. The next card is headed Check your email. We send a six-digit code to the address you gave.
  2. Type the code.

The code is valid for 15 minutes. If it does not arrive, you can ask for another after 60 seconds.

Create your organisation

The card is headed Create your organisation. It asks for three things:

FieldWhat it is
Organisation nameWhat members and invitations show
Billing countryDecides how VAT is applied to your invoices
VAT numberOptional. A validated EU number outside Lithuania is reverse-charged

You become the organisation's owner.

The billing country is not where your database runs. You pick the location when you create a service, and the two are independent.

Add a second factor

The Security step offers two-factor authentication. It is optional for customer accounts and strongly encouraged, and the screen has a visible way past it.

The second factor is a six-digit code from an authenticator application, following RFC 6238: six digits, a new one every 30 seconds. It is the only kind supported. Enrolment is covered in full on multi-factor authentication.

Two-factor authentication is mandatory for Balta staff accounts, without exception.

If an organisation you belong to requires it, you enrol before you can do anything else in the dashboard.

Is there a free trial?

No. Every service reserves dedicated CPU, memory and storage the moment it’s created — capacity no other customer can use. That guarantee is why a payment method is required to start.

What you will see

After the last step you land in the dashboard with one organisation and, if you completed First service, one service provisioning. The organisation switcher is in the top bar. You can belong to more than one organisation and switch between them there.

Joining an organisation instead

To join an organisation somebody else owns, open the invitation they emailed you. An invitation lasts seven days, works once, and works only for the address it was sent to. Accepting it adds you to their organisation with the role they chose.

Troubleshooting

The code says it is wrong. Codes expire after 15 minutes and each one works once. Ask for a new one and use the newest email, not the first.

No email arrived. Check the spam folder, then ask for another after 60 seconds. If a second one does not arrive, the address may have been mistyped on the Account step.

The invitation link says it is not valid. An invitation expires after seven days, works once, and is bound to the address it was sent to. Signing in with a different address will not accept it. Ask whoever invited you to send another.

You were sent to enrolment and cannot leave it. An organisation you belong to requires two-factor authentication. There is no grace period and no dismiss: enrolment and signing out are the only things available until you finish. See multi-factor authentication.
